The name “Renegade Ministry” encapsulates the essence of our mission, vision, and core values, resonating deeply with our commitment to a Biblical worldview, and family history.
The term “renegade” can traditionally refer to someone who defies conventional norms, which aligns with our mission to follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance rather than following worldly expectations.
Birthed from Nelina’s time as a Roadschooling mama, she saw education differently than most. She would pack up the girlies and hit the road with the trailer to different areas of the country, learning, educating, and serving in practical hands-on ways.
Nelina got there by being a renegade. By not conforming. By driving a 2011 Ford F250 with a 34 foot fifth wheel trailer. By herself. With three kids. Across the country.
She named her truck Renegade as a reminder of what is possible when you don’t listen to those that say it can’t or shouldn’t be done. She named Renegade in defiance of those that said she didn’t have the skills or the right to accomplish her dream.
Nelina’s dream for Roadschool was always a form of homeschooling that allowed the places and experiences to drive learning, rather than standardized curriculum in the realms of geography, economics, history, agriculture, and architecture, while weaving in opportunities to serve others.
In support of both Nelina and her dream of Roadschool, Eric had all of the Ford emblems on Nelina’s truck replaced with custom “Renegade” logos in the same colors and font that Ford used. They serve as a reminder of what can be accomplished with support and encouragement.
We are bringing that support and encouragement to others. Just as with Roadschool, where it was a collaborative “all hands on deck” effort to make the venture succeed, Renegade Ministry has the same vision to come alongside those we serve to advance their efforts in Kingdom work. It wasn’t just Nelina on the road with the kids, it was the girls learning and implementing many steps to facilitate life on the road, including water, sewer, and electrical hookups, cooking, planning, navigating, dealing with issues that inevitably pop up, and being flexible in sketchy locations. It was Eric at home working to pay for it. It was Nelina’s dad, Tim, fielding phone calls to troubleshoot a generator breakdown. It was our mechanic, Jason, ALWAYS answering the phone when Nelina called from the road. It was strangers willing to help with an electrical issue in the trailer. Eric routinely says, “Life is a team sport.”
Renegade Ministry Core Values
Devotion, Action, Service, and Hope
Devotion: Our unwavering commitment to the Holy Spirit’s guidance and Biblical truth is reflected in the term “renegade.” It signifies a bold, unyielding devotion to God’s calling, even when it requires stepping outside conventional boundaries.
Action: The shift from “WWJD” (What Would Jesus Do?) to “DWJD” (Do What Jesus Did!) embodies the renegade spirit. It emphasizes proactive, tangible actions inspired by Jesus’ life, challenging us to be dynamic and responsive in our ministry efforts.
Service: Serving alongside those on the front lines of ministry requires flexibility and adaptability—traits of a renegade. Our name reflects our readiness to support and encourage missionaries and organizations in unconventional and impactful ways.
Hope: Bringing hope to communities and individuals aligns with the renegade ethos of transformation and renewal. We aim to inspire hope by fostering community and sharing the love of Christ, often in unexpected and transformative ways.
Our core values (Devotion, Action, Service, and Hope) spell DASH.
The song “The Dash,” (spelled -[dash] if you are looking it up) by Crowder and TobyMac, reflects on the significance of the “dash” between the birth and death dates on a tombstone. It emphasizes living life with purpose and meaning, focusing on how one spends their time, and the impact they have on others. The lyrics align with the mission of Renegade Ministry… making the most of our lives, cherishing relationships, and leaving a positive legacy.
In essence, “Renegade Ministry” is not just a name; it is a declaration of our intent to pursue God’s mission with boldness, creativity, and a willingness to challenge the principalities, powers, and the rulers of the darkness of this world for the sake of the Gospel. It is a declaration that we will do all we can with The Dash that God has given us to bring honor and glory to His name.
What will you do with your dash?
